Hi everyone,
Alexya here. Admittedly this is a quick letter — I’m elbow deep planning a few wine parties that I’d love to see you for this month.
If you’re new here: welcome to the Function. Every other week I’ll send you a note about a tightly curated month of D.C. events put on by independent organizers who are keeping our city creative, innovative, and connected.

FORM + FUNCTION RUNS ON YOUR INTEL. Where do you like to go? Who puts on your favorite events? Which artists do you make time to patronize? How do you spend your free time?
Send me a note on Instagram (or reply here via email) to put us all on to a new-to-us creative happening and I’ll feature it in an upcoming newsletter.
That’s it for now! See you out there,
Alexya ☆
A LITTLE LATE, STILL GREAT
For the second newsletter of each month, I’ll share some either recently announced events or things I missed that didn’t make it to the calendar. Late but still great.
THE 51ST’S IMAGINING THE FUTURE OF CREATIVITY IN WARD 7 — JULY 18 FROM 12-2PM
Everyone loves creativity, but what does it cost a neighborhood to support it? Our favorite worker-owned D.C.-first news outlet The 51st hosts a meeting at The Nicholson Project in Ward 7 for creative entrepreneurs and artists to discuss what they need to generate the kind of art that helps people feel a sense of place and ownership in the neighborhood. Plus, it’s all hands on deck for a collaborative mural. Everyone’s welcomed.
DINNER’S SERVED POP-UP AT CREATIVE GROUNDS — JULY 19 AT 6PM
There’s a new dinner series in town. Dinner’s Served is matching an artist and a chef with an evening host to bring everyone into a singular conversation spanning art, food memories, and more. Each guest gets to sit for five courses and walk away with a personal sketch by artist Maurice Scarlett III.
As of today, tickets are sold out but I’m hearing there may be a few more going up later this week.
MUSEUM OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE 3RD ANNUAL CULTURE FESTIVAL — ALL DAY ON JULY 25 AT THE FESTIVAL CENTER
We’re so lucky to have such a singular cultural center here in D.C. like the MPP. Next weekend, they’ve got three straight days of programming for the third annual Palestinian Culture Festival, but if you can choose any day, you should absolutely try to get there on Saturday: it’s a big day with an artist market, dancing, music, storytelling, and more. Note that this takes place at the Festival Center nearby in Adams Morgan, not the museum itself.
D.C. ABORTION FUND POOL PARTY AT THE YARDS — JULY 22 @ 5:30PM
Been a severe lack of pool parties this summer I think. This party’s got different ticket tiers that get you snacks, merch and/or drinks at the pool. Do something sexy for D.C.
WAVEDASH PRESENTS AT PATCHWORK DC — JULY 31 AT 7PM
First, this is a plug for a new space in Dupont Circle called Patchwork, a 100% independently run makerspace in an otherwise creatively underserved neighborhood. While they’re hosting open hours for coworking, creating, and meeting all throughout July, this DIY lineup booked by WAVEDASH is (probably?) Patchwork’s first public show — totally worth showing up to welcome them to the neighborhood.
FORM + FUNCTION FEEDS OFF YOUR EVENTS. Send me notes about what you’re planning or where you’ll be — email me at [email protected] or find us on Instagram.
